Giving Early Career Physicians Support to Succeed

One of the most important times in a physician’s career occurs just after training is completed and as the first job begins. It is during this seven-year time period where members face the challenges of starting a substantial career track and adapting to a full-time career and ongoing personal life demands. In addition to a new job, negotiating terms and expectations of employment, financial uncertainty and work/life balancing, there are tremendous pressures to perform well and be able to masterfully care for patients.

The Early Career Professionals Council & Section is here to provide support and resources to physician members out of training facing this unique set of career stage and professional challenges. This Section will provide members with a forum to learn, share knowledge and grow, and provide them with a voice within the College.

Mission Statement

To provide the voice and a forum within the College for early career cardiovascular specialist physicians. The Council represents the cardiovascular specialist in the first seven post-training years, identifies needs and informs College programs to meet such needs, supports relevant career development activities and networking, and fosters professionalism, engagement, and leadership in College activities.

Goals

  • Act as a liaison to—and a voice for—early career cardiovascular specialist members within and on behalf of the College.
  • Support dedicated resources for new professionals, including but not limited to, board certification preparation tools, maintenance of certification, access to guidelines, and a primer to quality programs.
  • Create specific practical and clinical programming and content geared towards early career professionals at the ACC annual meeting, e.g., social media utilization for professional networking and information; clinical practice financial fundamentals; understanding professional liability, reimbursement, and specific medical practice realities; and case reviews of unusual presentations of cases.
  • Provide information relevant to early career cardiologists through a newsletter and web presence on CardioSource.org to include a community that provides a forum to discuss difficult cases or medical practice and research issues.
  • Advise the Board of Trustees and other governance units of College on matters relevant to early career professionals.

Leadership

The Early Career Professionals Section is governed by a Council comprised of eight members in total. This includes seven physician members in various stages of their first seven years post-training from various work settings and sub specializations in cardiology. A Fellow of the ACC or Master of the ACC will also hold a position on the council.
