Interventional Scientific Member Section

The Interventional Scientific Council and Section was created as a result of a proposal put forth by member interventionalists to the College’s Board of Trustees at their August 2007 meeting.

Our Mission

The Interventional Scientific Council and Section provides a forum for interventional cardiovascular specialist members within the ACC, and works to develop an overarching strategy for the College’s current and upcoming interventional initiatives and activities. Through section meetings, work groups and ongoing discussions, section members participate in an organized way and develop a collective voice to advance and advocate priorities and increase educational opportunities within the ACC that correspond both to the College’s mission and the Section’s objectives.

The Interventional Scientific Council reports to the Board of Trustees. The ACC President-Elect appoints the Chair of the Interventional Scientific Council. The Section is governed by the Interventional Scientific Council, which is chaired by George Dangas, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.S.C.A.I.

The Council/Section convenes at least once annually at the ACC Annual Scientific Sessions and i2 Summit. The Section welcomes all ACC members with an interest in interventional cardiology to attend.

Our Objectives

  • To improve quality of care
  • To strengthen advocacy efforts for the recognition of interventional cardiology and its role in patient care, and for improved access to care
  • To increase the opportunities for interventional education
  • To enhance opportunities for mentoring and career development
  • To foster relationships with other organizations that support interventional cardiology

All members of the College who are certified in Interventional Cardiology or have identified Interventional Cardiology as an area of interest in their member profile are invited to join the Section.

Education

Through the contributions of many section members in the Meetings & Education Work Group, ACC offers educational programming specifically designed for the interventional cardiologist at the annual i2 Summit. This event offers focused interventional tracks, live cases, and sessions on ABIM Maintenance of Certification. In addition to i2 Summit and other interventionally-focused programs throughout the year, Section members have the opportunity to contribute to ACC’s print and electronic publications, including JACC: Interventions, and the College’s professional education resource, CardioSource.org.

Quality

The Interventional Scientific Section recognizes the importance of supporting ACC’s ongoing performance improvement activities through reviewing guidelines and clinical documents, as well as through collaborations with the National Cardiovascular Data Registry®. Section leadership was instrumental in developing the Peripheral Arterial Disease Performance Measures and Data Standards.

ABIM Maintenance of Certification

To maintain your time-limited ABIM Board Certification in interventional cardiology, ABIM requires you to enroll and participate in Maintenance of Certification (MOC).

MOC Includes:

  • Completing the Form Attesting Interventional Cardiology Practice
  • Earning 100 combined self-assessment points in medical knowledge and practice performance, with a minimum of 20 points in each category. Points can be earned at any time during your certification cycle.
  • Passing the secure examination in interventional cardiology. The exam can be taken beginning in year six of your certification.

Please note that you must maintain your ABIM certification in cardiovascular disease to maintain certification in interventional cardiology.

The Form Attesting Interventional Cardiology Practice requires you to document performance as the primary operator, co-operator, or supervisor of 150 PCI cases in the two years prior to expiration of your certification. Each case only counts as one procedure, regardless of manipulations performed. You will also be required to verify participation in PCI quality improvement projects.

If you are unable to meet the volume requirement, you may complete a procedural log of 25 consecutive PCI cases, including outcomes, in which you have served as the primary operator during the two-year documentation period.

Register with ABIM now. The documentation period for certifications expiring 12/31/2010 may end no later than 10/1/2010. The Form Attesting Interventional Cardiology Practice will only be mailed to interventional cardiologists enrolled in ABIM MOC and in their final year of their current certifications. If you are not yet participating in ABIM MOC, you should also enroll immediately to begin completing your requirements.
