The ACC Surgeon Council is a leadership forum for cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons to identify, develop, and implement initiatives related to strengthening and enhancing the surgeon perspective within the American College of Cardiology.
The ACC Surgeon Council is a leadership forum for cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons to identify, develop, and implement initiatives related to strengthening and enhancing the surgeon perspective within the American College of Cardiology.
The Council represents those interests within the College and facilitates the integration of external stakeholders, including professional societies. The purpose of the Council is to ensure surgical perspectives have been considered in College strategy, activities, and initiatives.
The American College of Cardiology has 1,311 members who are board certified in Thoracic Surgery. According to the American Board of Medical Societies, there are about 6,000 US board-certified thoracic surgeons.

Council Objectives:
- To improve quality of care in the cardiovascular patient
- To enhance coordination of surgeon leadership
- To increase the opportunities for collaboration between surgeons and cardiologists
- To enhance opportunities for mentoring and career development
- To foster relationships with other organizations that support surgeons
Structure:
Membership of the Council consists of member F.A.C.C.s, representing relevant surgeon societies and College surgeon leadership. Active engagement is sought from specific College initiatives related to registries, quality, education, life-long learning, advocacy, guidelines, and the ACC CV Surgery Committee.
Surgeon Council membership also seeks representation from private and academic practice settings, cardio-thoracic, congenital heart and vascular specialties, as well as emerging models, such as the hybrid operating room.
Scope:
The ACC Surgeon Council
• Establishes a forum to communicate and champion ACC’s surgeon voice to ACC leadership
• Establishes strategy, coordinate surgeon activities and assess surgeon involvement in College initiatives
• Recommends strategy to ACC’s Board of Trustees to increase surgeon involvement and integration in College
• Collaborates with relevant ACC committees to provide support on surgeon perspective and involvement
• Continues to identify and develop strong surgeon leadership
• Develops recommendation to BOT for establishing Surgeon Member Section
2008 – 2010 Priorities:
• Enhance surgeon perspective in educational programming at ACC’s Annual Meeting
• Participate in ACC’s Health System Reform efforts
• Collaborate on national quality issues through NCDR and STS (The Society of Thoracic Surgeons) data registries
