Read Comments from ACC Leadership The cardiovascular community has lost a renowned leader and a dear friend. James T. Dove, M.D., M.A.C.C., passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2010 in Springfield, Illinois. Dr. Dove struggled mightily with pancreatic cancer for well over a year. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. Dr. Dove graduated from Wittenberg University in 1961 and from Case-Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland in 1965. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fourth year as Chief Resident at Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Medicine in New York. He spent two years in Public Health Service assigned to Washington, D.C., at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. VA Hospital, and the National Institutes of Health. He completed his cardiology training at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. Dr. Dove was the founding partner of Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants, Ltd., a pioneering organization designed as a regional referral center in Central Illinois based on the motto "Quality, Compassionate, Personal Care." Today, Prairie has more than 47 board certified physicians and 35 clinic sites in Illinois. At the time of his death, Dr. Dove was Clinical Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine. He served as chief of the Division of Cardiology from 1991 until 1999. The medical residents at SIU honored him as an outstanding subspecialty teacher. He was actively involved in educational program development for students, residents, paramedical personnel and primary care physicians. Dr. Dove was involved in clinical research and served until 2005 on the Board of Directors of the Prairie Education and Research Cooperative, a practice-funded, non-profit research foundation. His interests were in coronary artery disease, quality initiatives and, more recently, in the use of an electronic medical record to facilitate quality performance. He also had a longstanding interest in improving patient access to quality cardiovascular care and facilitating care delivery between subspecialty physicians and primary care physicians. He was known for his commitment to quality patient care and health care reform. Dr. Dove was a past Governor for the American College of Physicians, Downstate Illinois Chapter, and received the Outstanding Clinician Laureate Award from the Illinois Chapter of the American College of Physicians in 1992. He was awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians in April 2002. He served on the Illinois Chapter American College of Cardiology (ACC) Board of Councilors from the inception of the chapter and was elected president and governor of the chapter in 1997. Nationally, he served on numerous committees, working groups, and task forces including the ACC Quality Strategic Directions Committee, Guidelines Applied to Practice, International Committee Work Group, Twenty-First Century Task Force, Board Effectiveness Task Force, and the Medical Informatics Committee. For the ACC, he served as chair of the Board of Governors, Secretary, chair of the Budget, Finance & Investment Committee, Treasurer, chair of the Nominations Committee, Vice President and President from 2007 – 2008. He was awarded Mastership in the American College of Cardiology in 2008. In March 2010, the ACC honored Dr. Dove for his countless contributions to improving the quality of cardiovascular care by endowing a lectureship in his name at the Annual Scientific Session, as well as naming its annual Chapter Recognition Award for Quality the "James T. Dove Chapter Recognition Award for Quality." Dr. Dove was a board member on the Health Level Seven, Inc. (HL7) Advisory Committee and co-chair of the Clinical Information Interchange Collaborative (CIIC) for HL7. He served on the Clinical Decision Support Technical Expert Panel for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He served as a member of the Expert Panel for the Integrated Clinical Guideline for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction for the National Institutes of Health and on the National Quality Forum’s Clinical Decision Support Technical Expert Panel. He was a member of the Cardiovascular Medicine Work Group for the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®). He served on the United Way Board of Central Illinois and the Network Knowledge Board (public television station). Dr. Dove received the John Paul Harris Fellowship Award for outstanding community achievement from the Springfield Rotary Club in December 2004. "We have lost a close friend, a super colleague, and one of most valuable volunteers the College has ever had in its 61 years of existence. The nation and the College are in a much better place with Jim's seven decade presence and unending service for all of us," said ACC President Ralph G. Brindis, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.C. "His absence leaves a great chasm in all of our hearts with our collective thoughts now focused on Jim's family and loved ones." "Jim had a profound influence on the College and all of the staff and members who were fortunate to work with him," said ACC CEO Jack Lewin, M.D. "While his generosity, warmth, wit, and leadership skills will be profoundly missed, his contributions and friendship will be long cherished."Dr. Dove is survived by his beloved wife Carol; his children, Laura and Steven; and six grandchildren, Noah, Adam, Ainsley, Connor, Sierra and Madison. Dr. Dove's funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 321 S. Seventh St., Springfield, Illinois, with burial later that day at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Friends may visit with Dove’s family during "calling hours" tentatively scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the James T. Dove M.D. Conference Center inside Prairie Heart Institute at St. John’s.
