Overview

Congenital cardiac malformations of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) range from very severe (hypoplastic left heart syndrome), to mild (bicuspid aortic valve). These lesions are genetically inheritable, with variable phenotype. It is relatively common for patients with bicuspid aortic valve or hypoplastic left heart syndrome to have a family member with a related left ventricular outflow tract lesion. Identifying a lesion like bicuspid aortic valve in a family member may change the management or surveillance of the family member, including identifying valvular or aortic pathology.
