Overview

With the many imaging choices now available in a clinical setting, the challenge for the clinician, patient, and payer is to optimize appropriate utilization of these diagnostic options. This program discusses the appropriate use of various imaging modalities, including:

  • Echocardiography, including transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) , and stress echo. 
  • Positron emission tomography (PET), 
  • Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) 
  • Computed tomography (CT) 
  • Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Learner Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Select the best noninvasive stress imaging study for patients with a bundle branch block to minimize false-positive results. 
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared with echocardiography to promote safe and cost-effective imaging practices.
