COURSE OVERVIEW/STATEMENT OF NEED

Stimulating, Comprehensive and Current!

Interventional cardiologists must manage and treat coronary, valvular, congenital, acquired and non-cardiac vascular disease for optimal patient outcomes despite frequently evolving techniques, technologies and pharmacologic adjuncts. Board certification or recertification is the “gold standard of excellence” to signify clinical and technical competence and proficiency among interventional cardiologists.

The ACCF/SCAI Premier Interventional Cardiology Overview and Board Preparatory Course is designed to assist both those preparing for Board certification or recertification and those desiring a clinically relevant review of interventional cardiology. This stimulating review course offers an inclusive and current, evidence-based review of interventional cardiology that will both test and increase your knowledge.

Learn the key strategies of Board preparation while focusing on the five main content areas tested on the ABIM Board exam:

  • Basic science
  • Pharmacology
  • Imaging
  • Procedural techniques
  • Case selection and management

Expert faculty will guide you through comprehensive and robust updates, plus lead interactive discussions of ABIM examination guidelines. Maximize your time in Dallas by arriving a day early to participate in the optional Interventional Cardiology Updates 2011 and 2012 Maintenance of Certification Learning Session, offered on Thursday afternoon.

Learner Objectives
The goal of this course is to prepare physicians for certification or recertification by enhancing competency in interventional cardiology.

Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to —

  • Summarize key concepts of vascular biology and atherosclerosis and the fundamental concepts of cardiovascular physiology
  • Explain thrombosis pathways and the use of antithrombotic therapeutics, including antiplatelet, anticoagulant and thrombolytic agents
  • Discuss adult congenital heart disease and the application of interventional therapies in this setting, including imaging fundamentals and pharmacologic adjuncts useful in PCI
  • Interpret and critique the findings of major clinical trials and existing interventional devices and techniques in interventional cardiology
  • Summarize ACC/AHA/SCAI guidelines regarding the practice of interventional cardiology, particularly with respect to indications for catheterization and intervention
  • Identify gaps in knowledge and focus study efforts on filling those gaps
