COURSE OVERVIEW/STATEMENT OF NEED
Nearly two-thirds of the women in the United States who die suddenly of myocardial infarctions had no symptoms. Yet, simply by leading a healthy lifestyle, Americans can lower their risk of heart disease by as much as 82 percent. This January, the American College of Cardiology Foundation presents its 6th Annual Heart of Women’s Health course to discuss the prevention of cardiovascular disease and other related topics. The one-and-a-half day course serves as a vehicle to raise awareness of the number one cause of death among women, cardiovascular disease. The Heart of Women’s Health program reviews contemporary strategies to help manage women who are at-risk of heart disease. Attendees can expect to engage in stimulating discussions with expert faculty that focus on encouraging lifestyle choices for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and providing optimal care for those who develop CVD. Key topics include coronary artery disease, risk stratification and gender differences in patients with CVD.
Learner Objectives The overall goal of this course is to enhance knowledge and ultimately increase competency in the treatment of CVD in women.
Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to —
- Distinguish gender, racial and ethnic disparities of care in the management, diagnosis and treatment of patients
- Implement evidence-based, contemporary approaches and updated guidelines for the prevention of CVD in a diverse population of female patients
- Describe the screening initiatives, performance metrics and possible therapies used to manage coronary artery disease
- Discuss risks in pregnant women with CVD, as well as complications that contribute to the development of heart disease
- Identify successful lifestyle strategies that employ women to decrease risk and improve health outcomes
