COURSE OVERVIEW/STATEMENT OF NEED
Improve your clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of non-coronary vascular diseases.
In the U.S., an estimated 81.1 million adults (one in three) have one or more types of cardiovascular disease (CVD); 31.8 million of whom are aged 60 or older. In almost every year since 1900, CVD accounts for more deaths than any other single cause or group of causes in the U.S. Peripheral vascular disease (PVD), which is often linked with CVD, affects about eight million Americans and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality.
Join your colleagues at the Heart House in Washington, D.C. for a comprehensive, two-day review of diagnosis and treatment strategies for patients with PVD. This highly interactive course explores the concepts regarding peripheral artery diseases, basic components of venous thromboemboli management, diagnosis of mesenteric ischemia, etiology of carotid artery disease and strategies for the treatment of multi-system atherosclerosis.
Expand your knowledge of PVD and improve your skills by interacting with leaders in the field during this in-depth course to discuss:
- Selecting the appropriate therapies for venous thromboemboli (DVT/PE)
- Managing peripheral artery disease, renal artery disease and aortic disease
- Determining treatment options for carotid artery and intracranial vascular disease
- Incorporating novel technologies in the treatment of thoracic and abdominal aortic diseases
- Identifying uncommon vascular diseases and venous ulcers
New for 2012
- Additional case presentations
- Small group interactive discussions on highlighted topics
- Lunchtime breakout sessions
If you are a cardiovascular specialist, train residents and fellows, or are otherwise involved in the assessment and treatment of patients with PVD, this course is for you.
Training Program Directors This course will serve as a basis for required COCATS teaching in vascular diseases. |
Learner Objectives The overall goal of this course is to enhance knowledge and increase competency in treating peripheral vascular disease (PVD).
Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to —
- Determine appropriate strategies to screen patients for non-coronary vascular disease
- Compare strengths and weaknesses of imaging modalities to diagnose vascular diseases
- Evaluate treatment options for stroke prevention in asymptomatic and symptomatic patients with carotid artery disease, including revascularization (surgical and endovascular) and optimal medical therapies
- Define the treatment options for patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms to minimize morbidity and mortality
- Identify the role of risk factor modification and revascularization strategies in improving quality of life for patients with peripheral artery disease of the lower extremities
- Improve the treatment algorithm for patients with atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis
- Develop an optimal algorithm for the diagnosis and management of patients’ deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
