COURSE OVERVIEW/STATEMENT OF NEED

Leaders in the profession and the public agree that physicians must demonstrate their skill and knowledge in the evaluation and treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. This demonstration of competence is dependent in part on the successful completion of proctored examinations for certification and recertification offered by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

The Windy City hosts the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s (ACCF) intensive Board certification review course, designed to help you prepare for the ABIM secure exam. Over four-and-one-half days, you will receive a broad and in-depth summary of the cardiovascular disease curriculum. Following ABIM’s examination blueprint, this review course emphasizes pathogenesis, pathophysiology, natural history, epidemiology and evidence-based guidelines for diagnostic assessment and clinical management.

The course includes exam-oriented lectures delivered by expert faculty members; case-based reviews; practice exam booklets for general cardiology, electrophysiology and electrocardiography; plus, an audience response system that allows you to compare answers with peers and faculty experts. The course provides participants the tools and knowledge to analyze Board-style questions and prepare for the exam.

The curriculum also serves as a thorough review of general cardiology for attendees who are not planning to take the Board exam.

Optional opportunities for optimum results! Attendees enrolled in ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program and required to earn points towards recertification have three additional opportunities to receive MOC credit:

  1. The ACCF Interactive Study Session, offered to attendees for an additional charge, earns participants 20 Part II MOC credits
  2. Exclusive online access to www.CardioSource.org, offered at no charge, with an opportunity to earn up to 30 Part II MOC credits
  3. An Expanding and Equitable New ERA for Atrial Fibrillation 2.0: Performance Improvement Education and Research for Stroke Prevention, Symptom Reduction and Emerging Therapies (A New ERA 2.0), an AF Performance Improvement initiative offered free to participants. Attendees who are enrolled in the A New ERA 2.0 initiative can attend this optional AF educational workshop, leading to 20 Part IV MOC credits

Learner Objectives
The overall goal of this course is to enhance competency in cardiovascular diseases to prepare for certification or recertification.

Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to —

  • Identify gaps in their knowledge base and focus study efforts on filling gap areas
  • Summarize ACC/AHA clinical practice guidelines regarding the practice of general cardiology
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with the distribution of expected examination questions
  • Interpret ABIM answer sheets to become familiar with the examination process
  • Develop test-taking strategies
  • Practice ABIM-style multiple choice tests
