COURSE OVERVIEW/STATEMENT OF NEED
The success of the College’s education mission depends upon ongoing contributions from talented, expert faculty. Emerging teachers must be identified and brought into the ACCF teaching fold.
A generous grant from The Michael Wolk Heart Foundation is supporting a Teaching Skills Workshop for Emerging Faculty (“Educate the Educators”) to be held in 2012 in Washington, D.C. The goal of this workshop is to increase the competency and performance of participants’ teaching skills. These emerging faculty will then be considered by ACCF leadership as potential candidates for future ACC involvement including, but not limited to, faculty for education courses, committee membership, JACC reviewers, and authors for self-assessment products and CardioSource.
The course is limited to no more than 20 emerging, talented faculty who will be selected from nominations. Each awardee will be reimbursed for all travel expenses associated with attending the 2012 Teaching Skills Workshop for Emerging Faculty.
A highlight of the workshop is that at the conclusion of the course, two outstanding faculty from this group of workshop participants will be selected as recipients of the ACC W. Proctor Harvey, M.D., Young Teacher Award. These awards are presented every two years for the purpose of identifying, recognizing and honoring young members of the College who have distinguished themselves by their dedication and skill in teaching, and to stimulate the awardees to continue their careers in education. Each Harvey Award winner will receive a cash award of $5,000 to be used at his/her discretion, a $1,200 travel award to cover travel expenses to attend the College’s Annual Scientific Session in 2013, and recognition at the Convocation ceremony held at Annual Scientific Session.
Learner Objectives The overall goal of this course is to enhance participant’s competence by promoting the development of skills for those emerging faculty who are committed to contributing to ACCF’s education mission and to facilitate this transfer of knowledge into their professional practice.
Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to —
- Apply instructional design principles, including selection and use of appropriate media, in planning and delivering education
- Effectively present in face-to-face settings, including the use of media and humor
- Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate content
- Envision creative ways in which to use emerging technology to further learning
- Comprehend the range of American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) education activities
- Participate enthusiastically and effectively as educators in at least one future ACCF activity
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for Fellows or Associate Fellows of the American College of Cardiology in good standing, who have not yet attained the academic rank of professor. Candidates should also be in a full-time academic position where there is a complement of medical students or house-staff to be taught. Exceptional talent and dedication to teaching (assisting and supporting the learning process) will guide the selection of workshop attendees.

Tuition The registration tuition includes continental breakfasts, refreshment breaks, lunches and course materials.
Cancellations
ACCF reserves the right to cancel courses in the unlikely event of insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If a course is canceled or postponed, ACCF will refund registration tuition but cannot be held responsible for other costs or expenses, including cancellation/change penalties assessed by airlines, travel agencies or hotels.
Please Note Smoking is prohibited in all ACCF meeting rooms.
