The vision of the 2013 Women’s Career and Leadership Development Conference for Women Cardiologists and Cardiothoracic Surgeons is to diversify the cardiology and cardiothoracic field by creating a vibrant community of women cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons that will strengthen their non-clinical professional skills, provide opportunities to enhance their professional standing, and encourage them to assume leadership positions in the field and within the American College of Cardiology.
This one-and-a-half day course is intended to address continued under-representation of women leaders in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. Attendees will be able to apply their own strategic decision-making skills, leadership competencies and personal effectiveness in the management of teams, departments and organizations as they work with others to build commitment to goals and implement changes. A key feature of this intimate and interactive course is the opportunity to share tips with peers and learn from experienced women cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons who have steered their own successful careers.
Learner Objectives
The overall goal of this course is to improve the leadership and career skills of women cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons in both practice and academic settings by increasing participant competence in recognizing their own personal and professional characteristics as well as improving performance in skills and strategies to optimize participation within the medical workforce.
Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to —
- Identify the steps for positioning oneself as an emerging leader within one’s institution and the cardiology or cardiothoracic community
- Develop a personal career plan
- Discuss and design an action plan addressing barriers and exploring resources available for the implementation of the plan in personal and practice management
- Apply effective communication, negotiation and conflict management skills
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended to hone the professional skills of women cardiologists, cardio-thoracic surgeons, fellows-in-training, and early and mid-career practice professionals.

The registration tuition includes continental breakfast, refreshment breaks, lunch, dinner and course materials.
Cancellations
Cancellation, substitution or transfer to another course is allowed if written notification is received four weeks before a scheduled course. A full refund minus a $250 processing fee will be given for written notifications received fewer than four weeks before the first day of the course. No refund will be given for no-shows.
In the unlikely event that the course is canceled, the College will refund the registration tuition in full but is not responsible for any travel or hotel costs you may incur.
ACCF reserves the right to cancel courses in the unlikely event of insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If a course is canceled or postponed, ACCF will refund registration tuition but cannot be held responsible for other costs or expenses, including cancellation/change penalties assessed by airlines, travel agencies or hotels.
The American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF)’s Women’s Career and Leadership for Women Cardiologists and Cardiothoracic Surgeons Conference will sponsor five travel scholarships to attend the course. The purpose of the scholarship program is to provide female cardiovascular physicians and cardiothoracic surgeons the opportunity to travel to and attend the course as a means of helping them improve their leadership and career skills in both the practice and academic setting by providing them with the skills and strategies that will optimize their participation within the medical workforce.

The American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
