General Cardiology: Prevention/Risk Factor Modification

Over 50 percent of sudden cardiac death in athletes is attributable to cardiovascular disease (CVD). The need for healthcare specialists to develop a practical approach to identifying CVD in athletes is essential to avoid tragedies such as a heart attack on the field or court.

To address the challenges that professionals face when evaluating the health of athlete patients, the American College of Cardiology Foundation offers the Sports Cardiology Summit 2012: Protecting the Heart of the American Athlete. Experts in the field of sports cardiology and sports medicine will discuss, debate and present relevant case studies and up-to-date findings on cardiovascular care for athletes. This day-and-a-half, interactive course covers topics such as the epidemiology of sudden death, cardiac diagnostics, sports electrophysiology and exercise prescription.

LEARNER OBJECTIVES
The overall goal of this course is to enhance knowledge and ultimately improve competency in the practice of cardiovascular care for athletes.

Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to —

  • Define opportunities for cardiac care teams to enhance the cardiovascular care of athletes of all ages
  • Identify best practices for the prevention and treatment of sudden cardiac death episodes in young athletes
  • Assist in screening programs that identify at-risk athletes and provide safe participation recommendations
  • Interpret cardiac tests in athletes and correctly differentiate between normal athletic adaptations and cardiac pathology
  • Prescribe an appropriate exercise regimen for active individuals with heart disease
  • Work collaboratively with sports organizations and team physicians
  • Identify opportunities for research in sports and exercise cardiology

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is intended for cardiovascular specialists, sports medicine physicians, cardiovascular care associates internists, family physicians and other healthcare professionals with an interest in sports cardiology and sports medicine.
